Dear Parents,
Welcome to our second year at Grand Oak Elementary School. I am looking forward to having a positive experience with you and your child. I have many exciting things planned for the upcoming year.
First, I would like to tell you about myself. I am originally from Syracuse, New York. I have lived
in the Lake Norman area for the past 21 years. I have two children, a daughter who just got married and is in the Air Force stationed in Las Vegas and a son who just started sixth grade. This is my 21th year teaching in the CMS district. This is my 19th year teaching second grade. I am very excited and look forward to spending the year with your child.
During the first week, I will be talking to your child about my procedures and expectations for the year.
In order to keep you informed I have listed some basic information about my policies and procedures.
Supplies- If you have not brought in your supplies yet, please do so as soon as possible.
We begin using them on the first day so it is essential every student have their supplies right away.
If you purchased supplies from the PTA, it has already been delivered to the classroom.
Homework Folders – Each student will have a homework folder and a planner/agenda that they will take
home every night and return to school the following morning. Students will write their homework in their planner every Monday. Completed homework should be in the folder that evening and turned into their teacher the following morning. I check the folders every morning. Please be sure to check the folder and the planner nightly. The folder
and planner are the best forms of communication for us. If you have a question for me, please put it in the planner in the homework folder.
Discipline – In order to have an effective learning environment, it is essential that each student is on
their best behavior. I will be reviewing the rules of the classroom and my expectations with the students. In addition will be using a color card system to monitor the child’s behavior each day. Here is how my discipline chart works. If a child breaks a rule (school or class) they will be asked to pull a card. All students begin their day on a white card.
If they pull a card they will be on green. They will have a green dot put in their planner. Student are able to work
their green back to a white. Yellow cards cannot earn their white card back. If they pull a yellow, they will have a note in their planner. Any student who pulls a red will receive a phone call home. Please note that certain offenses (ie: fighting, cheating, etc.) will result in an automatic office referral. At the end of each day the students will receive the color dot they were on in their planner. If there is no dot you will see a stamp in red/blue ink (this means they didn’t pull a ticket). The dots will be made by a marker and I will write a brief note. Please be sure to initial in the behavior box so I know that you have seen their behavior.
Rewards -
Students will be given positive praise, trips to the treasure box, and drops in the bucket. For every 15
drops in the bucket that the whole class gets I will celebrate with a small celebration. (popsicles at recess or something like that)
Homework :
Reading – Students are expected to read 15-20 minutes each night. Please write the name of the book that your child read for homework in their planner in the space provided. This is how I determine if your child did their reading.
If it is not listed in the agenda, I will assume that your child did not read that night and they will not get a check for reading that night.
Word Work – Students will take an assessment to place them with the word sorts for their level. The will be assigned a word sort to work on in class for two weeks . They will do several activities with these words throughout these two weeks and then we will have a spell check at the end of those two weeks. I will not have word work homework but I will send home the words if you would like to review them at home. Out of the words we send home, we will check 10 random words off the list. I can also send home several ways to practice them at home if you chose to. This is not homework though.
Math – We will be sending home a math menus. There will be some assignments that students have to complete and the other ones can be chosen by them.
Schedule:
Lunch - 11:35-12:05
Monday-Genius Hour, Tuesday – PE, Wednesday- MUSIC AND ART, Thursday- MEDIA, Friday- TECHNOLOGY
Snack and Water Bottles: We eat lunch at 11:35, so your child will need to pack a snack every day.
This should be a dry snack that doesn’t require a spoon. Please try to send healthy snacks, ie: fruit, cheese crackers, etc. We call our snack a working snack because we will be working during this time. (Please no snacks that will change your child’s fingers orange.) Please be aware of the following rules regarding water bottles in the classroom: Water only- no flavored or carbonated waters and juice. Water should be plastic bottles with a screw on lid. Please keep fancy containers at home. Students may keep these in their cubbies.
Please email me if you need to reach me. I check my email almost daily; however there are times when I do not get to it right away. If you have an urgent matter or you need to inform me of something that concerns the current school day (ie: early dismissal, transportation) please do not send an email. Please put a note in the homework folder/planner
instead.
I am looking forward to great and exciting school year together.
Thank you for your cooperation and support,
Cassandra Juchter
